Did you know that unconsciously grinding your teeth is a disorder called bruxism? Although we often attribute it to stress, bruxism can be caused by a variety of factors. If left untreated, it can cause other disorders to happen, including temporomandibular joint disorders in your jaw or sleep orders including sleep apnea. If you or someone you know has been spotted unconsciously grinding their teeth, it may be a sign of bruxism.

One of the most common symptoms of bruxism is jaw pain. Oftentimes, bruxism can lead to temporomandibular joint disorders with the jaw, due to the consistency of teeth grinding. If you grind your teeth due to bruxism, they are at an increased risk for tooth damage, tooth wear and tear, and chipping and cracking.

Other common signs of bruxism include tongue indentations, cheek tissue damage, tooth sensitivity, problems opening and closing your jaw, and earache sensations that are not caused by your ears. If you have a sleep partner or roommate, ask them to check and note any times you may snore loudly at night, or more importantly grind your teeth as you sleep, as this is a sure sign that bruxism is happening.

With bruxism treatments, your smile will not only look better, but it can be healthier and better equipped for future occurrences too.
